  Perovskite solar cells are attractive for commercial applications because they are cheap to produce and scale up. We use a perovskite-structured material as an active layer. This material is usually a hybrid organic–inorganic lead or tin halide-based material. 

  
  

  Perovskite solar cells have increased in efficiency from 3.8% in 2009 to 25.7% in 2021. Silicon-based tandem cells have reached an efficiency of 29.8%, which exceeds the maximum efficiency of single-junction silicon solar cells. 

  However, perovskites degrade when exposed to oxygen, moisture, and light. Other research subjects include their short- and long-term stability.
