• Rhenium - sulfur halide clusters are a type of photoluminescent mixed anionic sulfur halide cluster materials. Mercouri G. Kanatzidis and others from Northwestern University reported a new material Rb ₆ Re ₆ S ₈ I ₈ , which contains isolated [Re ₆ S ₈ I ₆ ] ⁴⁻ clusters.

  
  

  Rb ₆ Re ₆ S ₈ I ₈ has a band gap of 2.06 ( 5 )  eV and an ionization energy of 5.51 ( 3 ) eV , and has a wide photoluminescence ( PL ) range from 1.01 eV to 2.12 eV  , quantum production of room temperature PL The efficiency is as high as 42.7% , and the PL life reaches 77 μs .

  Rb6Re6S8I8 _is soluble in a variety of polar solvents, including N _, N _- dimethylformamide, which enables solution processing into thin films less than ₁₅₀ nm thick . The authors prepared light-emitting diodes based on Rb ₆ Re ₆ S ₈ I ₈ films, demonstrating the potential of this type of material in optoelectronic devices.
